Expedited Passport Guide

What happens if you have to leave the country in a hurry, but you don’t have a valid passport? An expedited passport can help you if you have an unexpected business trip, vacation opportunity, or emergency. For most travel arrangements there’s enough time, but passports usually take 4-6 weeks to process from the time of application. Going anywhere outside of the Unites States requires a passport now, and you might need a passport expediting service. Here is some information as well as tips and tricks to getting an expedited passport (the information in this article is taken from http://travel.state.gov/passport/).

How to Receive an Expedited Passport

First off, if this is your first passport and not a passport renewal, you will need to apply in person for your passport no matter where you go. You can get expedited passport processing from the State Department or any regional passport agency. When you go, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out application for A U.S. Passport. Do not sign it until instructed to do so and be aware that you must provide your Social Security Number. You must submit your application in person.
  2. Submit evidence of U.S. Citizenship – an original of one of the following:
    1. Birth Certificate
    2. Naturalization Certificate
    3. Certificate of Citizenship
    4. Present identification – one of the following:
      1. U.S. Passport
      2. Naturalization Certificate
      3. Valid driver’s license
      4. Government ID – city, state or federal
      5. Current military ID
      6. Submit a photocopy of both the front and back of your identification. These should be on the same side of the photocopy.
      7.  Pay the application fee
      8. Provide one passport photo

If you are getting a passport renewal, you can apply by mail. Online passport services are available through private agencies for rush passports.

Passport Fees

Passport fees for Adult first time regular passports, as of Tuesday, July 13, 2010, are the following:

  • $140 plus a $25 execution fee for an Adult Passport Book & Card
  • $110 plus a $25 execution fee for an Adult Passport Book
  • $30 plus a $25 execution fee for an Adult Passport card

If you have a passport already and just need it renewed, the $25 execution fees do not apply. Expedited passports have an additional fee of $60. If you want overnight passport delivery, that is an additional fee of $12.72 both ways.

Therefore, if you are an adult, first time applicant, getting your passport services expedited, your total fees will be the following:

  • $250.44 for an Adult Passport Book & Card
  • $220.44 for an Adult Passport Book
  • $140.44 for an Adult Passport card

The above fees include the execution fee, the expedited passport fee, and overnight delivery of your application, both ways.

*Adults are anyone over the age of 16. Please see http://travel.state.gov/passport/fees/fees_837.html for additional information.

Method of Payment

Payment methods for expedited passports depend on where you go to get your passport. Passport agencies generally accept the following forms of payment:

  • Major credit cards, such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover
  • Debit or Check cards (not ATM cards)
  • Checks, bank drafts or money orders
  • Cash

If you are renewing your passport and mailing your information in, you can pay with a personal check or money order made out to U.S. Department of State. They do not accept cash. For a Post Office, Clerk of Court, or some other type of location, you’ll want to call and check what types of payment they accept.

When Will I Receive My Expedited Passport?

For expedited passport service, the time required is cut in half. That means instead of 4-6 weeks for your passport to be processed, it will only be 2-3 weeks (when overnight delivery is paid for both ways). The 2-3 week processing takes into account the amount of time estimated for your passport to be shipped to you. The online processing only takes 5-7 days, so the additional 7-14 days is for your expedited passport to reach you in the mail.

While expedited passport services can speed up the process, it is important to remember that the U.S. Department of State makes no guarantees. You can check your passport application status online.

Special Mailing Instructions

The U.S. Department of State strongly recommends the following when mailing your application for an expedited passport:

  • A passport applicant who is applying for a renewal by mail must clearly mark “Expedite” on the outside of the mailing envelope in order for the Expedited passport Processing times to apply
  • You should mail your passport applications and any personal documents using a traceable delivery method
  • Protect your passport pages from weather during the delivery process by using a secure means of packaging, like a Tyvek envelope

What if I Need My Passport in Less Than 2 Weeks?

Don’t worry, if you need your passport faster, there is still hope for you. In cases of emergency, you can make an appointment with a regional passport office. However, you should only make an appointment with a regional passport office if:

  • You need a U.S. passport in less than 2 weeks for international travel
  • You need a U.S. passport within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign travel visa

You can contact the National Passport Information Center to make an appointment or locate a passport agency. If you need to apply for an expedited passport at a regional passport office, the best thing is to schedule an appointment by using the Automated Appointment System. If you can’t get through or you can’t get an appointment early enough, get the travel documents you need in order and go to your nearest regional agency first thing in the morning. Explain the situation and they should be able to help you get your expedited passport as quickly as possible.

How to Get Your Passport in a Hurry

How to Get Your Passport in a Hurry

Passport expediting is vital in emergency situations when you need to obtain your travel document in hurry, typically within two weeks or less. When it comes to getting expedited passports, there are a few options available to United States citizens.

Imagine planning to travel outside of the United States for business or vacation in the next few weeks. Perhaps you’ve meticulously planned every detail of your trip and just discovered that you need a passport. You’ve logged on to the U.S. Department of State’s official website and discover that they are processing routine applications in approximately 4-6 weeks from the time of application. Four to six weeks? You don’t have that long to wait! Well, the good news is that there is a solution to your problem. There are third party companies that can provide expedited passport services faster than the 4-6 week expedited option from the State Department.

When obtaining an expedited passport you will still observe all of the rules and regulations you would follow during the regular passport process. The difference is that you will receive your U.S. passport much faster than if you went through the normal process. The only difference with expedited passports is the time required to get the travel document and the fees that must be paid. The rules differ slightly depending on specific circumstances; for example, there are special rules when obtaining passports for minors.

These third party companies are a great solution for people who do not want to deal with the paperwork and legwork required to obtain a passport as well as people who do not live near one of the twenty-one regional passport agencies that can provide expedited service.

The Process

The faster you provide the third party company that is expediting your passport everything they need, the faster they will be able to assist you with getting your passport. To start the process of obtaining your expedited passport you will need to complete the following steps.

  • Completed, unsigned passport application Form DS-11
  • Submit proof of citizenship.
  • Provide proof of identity.
  • Submit a photocopy of the identification document presented
  • Provide one (1) passport photo.
  • Make payment for new passport fees.

Using a qualified passport expediting service offers many benefits. You can have your new passport delivered to you as fast as 24-48 hours through an expediter. If you’re wondering how an expediting service can accomplish this when you can’t, the answer is simple. Because they have a special relationship with the regional agencies that gives them priority status, travel document expediting services can get you your passport fast with minimal effort on your part.

Another advantage of applying for a passport through a professional expediter is the fact that you can apply for both a U.S. passport and a travel visa simultaneously. Since the State Department does not issue travel visas to foreign countries, you would normally be required to apply for a passport and wait for its delivery before submitting the application for your travel visa. If you need your passport in a hurry but you can’t personally visit a regional agency professional passport expediting is your best choice. The additional fee is a small price to pay to guarantee that you get your passport in time to catch your flight.

In addition to the benefits previously discussed, expediting your passport through a third-party expediter can prevent delays. If you process your passport yourself through the U.S. Department of State, you will have a difficult time tracking your documents throughout the process. The National Passport Information Center only tracks what has been registered in the computer database, while most expedited passport services provide tracking so that you know exactly where your passport is at all times. Plus, the National Passport Information Center will charge you for any information they provide. If you run into any problems processing your own passport the U.S. Department of State will send you a letter notifying you. Once you receive the letter, then you can address the problem. Obviously, this adds unneeded time to how long it will take to process you documents. Utilizing a passport expediter allows you to resolve any issues much quicker, shaving days or even weeks off the process.

Overall, there are numerous reasons to use the services of third party companies that can provide expedited passport services faster than the 4-6 week expedited option from the State Department. Most people consider their time to be valuable and if you’re one of them, then you should consider using a passport expediter service to get your passport fast.

Passport Forms for an Expedited Passport

Many people can be intimidated when applying for a U.S. Passport. After all, a passport is used for international travel, and as such the restrictions and requirements are much more stringent than getting a drivers license or state-issued identification card.

While there are many options when applying for a passport – such as additional visa pages, consent forms for those under the age of 18 who are traveling abroad, and special requests for change of information (if you recently moved or your name has changed) – this article is going to focus on the basic application, to help make the entire process as quick and painless as possible.

What You Need

Before you walk into the travel agency and before you start dealing with filling out forms, there are a few things you should get to take with you.

  •   The first thing you need is proof of your United States citizenship. If you were born in the United States, the best way you show this is with a copy of your birth certificate. This will be returned to you. If you were born outside of the U.S., simply present a Certificate of Citizenship or a Certificate of Naturalization
  • Proof of identification. In this case, not only bring your drivers license or state-issued identification, but also make a photocopy of the front and back of it. Military identification and expired U.S. Passports are also accepted. You will need to present the real thing, and also submit the photocopy along with your passport application
  • A recent color photograph. This needs to show the full front of your face and must be 2 inches by 2 inches in size.

The Paperwork and DS-11 Application

Now that you have all the necessary things needed to get started on filling out the appication for your U.S. Passport. You can get the application at most most state municipal builtings (your local City Hall should cally the forms). If you want to save some time, you can find the form online and print it out.

The DS-11 U.S. Passport application and all required papers/certificates/photos must be filled out and presented in person at any of the following offices:

  •  County Clerk’s Office
  •  Designated municipal or county official
  • A judge’s office who is accepting passport applications
  • Passport Agengy

A quick search on-line will be able to tell you which offices nearest to your work or home are accepting the DS-11 U.S. Passport Application.

Fees

The cost for obtaining a United States Passport vary throughout the year, but not by much. The price for processing the application and the physical passport can be paid by check, credit card (AmEx, Visa, Discover, Master Card), money order, bank draft, or cashier’s check.

The usual turnaround time between submitting the application and receiving your passport is, on average, 6 weeks to 2 months. This can, for a little extra, be waived and cut down to only a couple of weeks via the expedited or rushed passport. Most people opt for a rushed passport to bypass the waiting time, and possible errors in delivery.

Right now, there has never been more of a demand for people to have U.S. Passports. Posessing a U.S. Passport not only allows you the freedom to travel wherever you like, but, because it is a Federally-issued and standardized ID, it trumps all other forms of identification.

So do yourself a favor. Whether you plan of short-notice traveling for business, family, or personal pleasure – or whether you just want to have the security of having a nationally (and internationally) accepted form of identification, get a U.S. Passport today.

Rushed Passport

Today, people are traveling more than ever, and with holiday seasons approaching, more and more people are finding themselves going to visit friends and loved ones, and not to mention those business trips to finalize things before the end of the fiscal quarter.

What many people do not realize, however, is that even a trip to Canada or Mexico requires a passport. In addition to this, an official U.S. Passport is universally accepted as identification everywhere you go – work, clubs, restaurants, and resorts.

Maybe you have an expired passport, or perhaps this is going to be your first time traveling abroad – the big question you might have is how to get a U.S. Passport and have it in time for your trip?

Typically, getting a passport can take almost 2 months – and that’s just the processing time. Take into account the time and travel involved to get photographs, appointments to fill out forms, and coordinating all of this with your travel plans. Unless you plan everything in your life almost half a year in advance, and can avoid all interruptions and unexpected turns in circumstances, you will probably need a passport a lot sooner than you think.

Relax. What few people know about is that you can bypass the red tape and get a rushed passport so you can have your U.S. Passport ready for your trip, so you can visit with your loved ones and go on that much needed vacation without having to wait for months on end.

A rushed passport is easy to get and there are benefits for bypassing the waiting and jumping through hoops. The first one is obvious – it cuts the processing and turnaround time from starting the application to getting on that jet plane or cruise ship bound for your destination by less than half. With a rushed passport, what is typically a wait of two months can be cut down to a little over two weeks waiting time.

Since 2008, Federal legislation has ruled that crossing any international borders by land or air requires a valid U.S. Passport. Gone are the days when you could simply get in your car and drive north to see your friends and family in Canada, or take a short vacation in Cozumel, Mexico to escape the winter chill with just your driver’s license as your only identification. These days, you need a passport.

What most everyone will tell you is that getting a passport for any reason takes a very long time, and is practically not worth the hassle.

Few people know (and even fewer travel agencies will tell you) that services exist to help you get a rushed passport. This isn’t just for emergencies and high ranking officials. Anyone can get a rushed passport for any reason at all, and it trumps the old system of filling out tons of forms, sending them off, and then waiting for months in hopes that your passport is being processed and sent back to you. A rushed passport costs very little more than the regular routine, but gets you your international identification in a small fraction of the time it takes for the regular procedure.

Many people living in northern states enjoy the convenience of being so close to Canada’s unspoiled natural vistas and majestic cities. Likewise, those in southern states enjoy being able to go to Mexico for the warmth and exotic culture. Plus there are those who enjoy flying to Europe, Asia, Africa – virtually everywhere in the world. With low airfare prices, traveling and sightseeing are becoming popular ways to spend a vacation.

However, in this day of busy schedules that are prone to change on a moment’s notice, you can’t always count on a 2 month waiting period to get your Passport by the time you need it.

With the right service, expedited and rushed passports can be had in half the normal time, or even a couple of weeks. The best part is that getting a rushed passport doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, like it used to. Rushed passports can be had for a very small fee.

There is absolutely no reason anyone should be without a passport. At home or abroad it is the one form of identification that trumps all others – and having a rushed passport means that you can travel whenever and wherever you want. Whether your job has you attending a conference or meeting with clients unexpectedly, if there is an emergency that requires you visit family or loved ones in another country, or if you just decide to get away from it all and have that well-deserved vacation, you will have that freedom without having to put it all off for over two months while you hope your passport is being processed.

A rushed passport bypasses all the bureaucracy and waiting, and gets you your freedom in no time at all. So stop sitting there, thinking you should have made travel plans months in advance. Book that business trip or vacation, without worrying if you’ll be able to make it to close that deal or see your loved ones.  You have so many better things to do with your time than waiting on red tape and a process that is decades old. Buck the system and get a rushed passport now!
